Mark Sauer

Mark Sauer literally fell into photography at an early age. When he was seven years old he flipped over the handle bars of his bicycle while riding on a bike path near his suburban Chicago home and landed on a plastic kodak instamatic camera which had been lost in the weeds. Over the years, Marks love for photography grew from taking pretty pictures on family vacations to telling visual stories of the life and world around him. After graduating from Illinois State University with a degree in fine art photography Mark was offered a photojournalism job at the Dixon Telegraph in Dixon, Illinois. In his ten years working at the Telegraph, Mark climbed from entry level photographer to photography editor of both the Telegraph and its sister publication in Sterling Illinois. Mark also developed a deep love and respect for telling the stories of the people and places he covered. After visiting the family of his wife Becca who lived in Northeast Minnesota, it was decided that a move north might be in order. At about the same time, his interest in nature photography took off from a casual hobby to a powerful interest after seeing the 1998 National Geographic article by Ely based photographer Jim Brandenburg. The landmark story displayed both Northeast Minnesota and the potential power of visual story telling in a whole new light.

In 1999 Mark was offered a job at the Mesabi Daily News in the heart of Iron Range and considerers himself to be extremely lucky to have the opportunity to work with a group of outstanding and talented co-workers and to live with his wife Becca, daughters, Darby, Hailey and Ryanne in this unique and beautiful area. The move to the Range also gave Mark the opportunity to develop his interest and skills in telling the visual stories of the wildlife and landscapes he found himself surrounded by. Over the past 12 years, taking pictures in the Northeast Minnesota forests, fields and lakes has grown to a level of passion and interest that rivals his love of photojournalism.

Mark Sauer has been a photographer and photojournalist for more than 20 years and is currently the chief photographer for the Mesabi Daily News covering all aspects of life and events on the Iron Range. When not working for the newspaper Mark spends his time photographing the unique and beautiful landscape and wilderness of the Arrowhead region.  Mark's work has been featured in more than a dozen national and regional magazines including Golfweek, Time, Simply Minnesota, American profile, and MSNBC.com where his work was selected for first place in the Pictures of the Week competition and latter selected for MSNBC's Pictures of the Year multimedia presentation.
Mark has also won numerous photojournalism awards from the Associated Press, National Newspaper Association, Illinois Press Association and the Minnesota Press Association.
